Today I Give Thanks

 
Today i wrote my heart …today i used my creativity in the form of poetry.  today i scribbled out my thoughts, my prayers that i scream from my soul.
Today I give thanks 
Today I offer praise 
Today I raise my hands to the One 
Who knows my days 
I trust in you 
I lean on you 
I wait on your unfailing ways
 
You cover me
You heal me
You made me
You seal me
You rescue me
You carry me
You have me
You hold me 
You save me
You love me 
You lift me
You keep me
 
Today I give thanks 
Today I offer praise 
Today I raise my hands to the One

empty of pretense.

imperfect but

loved, accepted, forgiven & chosen

Bold of who Jesus is.

Bold with love.

Bold with grace.

Bold with joy.

Bold with mercy.

Bold with forgiveness.

Bold with peace. 

Bold with gentleness. 

Bold with freedom found in the cross of Christ.

transparent

Help me be transparent.

You never sit down
Don’t wanna close your eyes
Ball of energy

Letter to my Grandpa

Jerry Lynwood Lee Berry 4/11/35-3/3/91

Dear Grandpa,

You have been gone 20 years ago today.

Your sons, your daughters, your wife, your family, your friends,

they miss you in so many ways!!

I miss you!  I think about you often, but I know you are okay!

You are in the presence of Jesus!

You are finally out of pain!

You don’t have to deal with the troubles of this world!

You are praising the One who died for you and riding that ‘glory train’!

Even though you are not physically here

You have been visible throughout the years.

I see  you when I look at my Dad!

You are in his smile. He has your eyes!

Your sense of humor.  He’s about your size.

He has your love for good food, adventure, and sports!

He is great father because of your example & support!

I see you when I look at a soldier.

‘Cause in the army you did go,

Serving our country in the Korean War

Shot in the leg, war veteran, HERO!

I sometimes see you in me.

They say I have your blue eyes & blonde hair!

Your jaw line & nose!

And our smiles can compare.

The way you would walk, talk, and laugh!

Your practical jokes, & how you were good at math!

I love to build, to draw, to create

Maybe an engineer, like you, some day I will make!

I heard your laugh would make a stonewall grin

And That you had the thickest skin.

Your southern accent was as sweet as honey

I wish I could have heard it, I’d even pay money.

I have thought of what I’d do if I could see you face to face

First I’ll admit, I’d hug your neck  to memorize your embrace.

I’d kiss your cheek, study your face, commit it forever in a special place.

I would ask you questions about your life.

decisions you made,

paths walked down,

choices that you weighed.

I’d tell you about who I am and what I’ve done.

I’d share my dreams, my hopes, my now.

I’d tell you what I do to have some fun.

I’d make you smile and get you to laugh somehow

I’d say thank you and what you have meant to me.

And I’d show you our family tree.

Without you we would NOT be here.

You are still loved so evidently.

Survived by many who hold you near

Who take  your name so genuinely

We will pass it on.

It is our responsibility

‘Til that sweet day

We meet you in glory.

Your grandkids will share your story.

It is our household legacy

It encompasses our existance

It is the Berry family history.

try to see the faces of

those who died

those who loved

those who lived

those who served

those who sacrificed

for my freedom

for those gone

our heritage given

for us now

our present democracy

for our future

our children

those who live beyond what we can see

what we know

how we live and breath

when my Dad drove the car

when my Dad drove the car

I could close my eyes & day dream

think about all sorts of things

like,

walking on the moon

singing to the stars

playing on the beach

while passing all the cars

when my Dad drove the car

I could close my eyes to sleep

and take my own little trip

like,

sailing on the seas

jumping over the moon

running with the mustangs

all while listening to the tunes

sometimes I asked him questions 

about when he travelled there

he told me stories from his youth

and his journey he did share

he made me smile

he made me giggle

sometimes he made me laugh

so hard I’d start to wiggle

his words were a melody

streaming through the space

he spoke of adventure, love, loss and triumph

sportsmanship & even running the race

so many beginnings, middles & endings

and stories that are yet to take place

“i swam in that river”

“i played on that field”

“i lived in that country” 

“i once forgot to yield”

when my Dad drove the car

I didn’t pay any attention

to the roads he chose to meet

I knew we’d get to where we’re going

and without any hesitation

he’d direct us down each street

he’d lead the path each day

that he needed us to take

his heart was leading the way

his hands were on the wheel

his foot was on the petal

pressing the gas to make it go

Sometimes the route was a little slow

sometimes pretty fast

sometimes unbelievably windy

sometimes unbearably hot with humidity that would forever last

sometimes overwhelmingly bitter & icey cold

with snowfalls that would block the roads

but all in all it didn’t matter

Cause I was with my Dad,  &  I was his! 

And he watched out for me, that’s just what he did! 

when my Dad drove the car

I didn’t want to take the lead

my Dad had it covered 

he cared for my wants & needs

while teaching me things each & every day

like,

how to love

how to trust

how to live

how to adjust

i watched him drive & navigate

i watched him lead & direct

i watched him laugh & love & talk of fate

i watched him forgive & forget

i saw my hero

i saw my friend

i saw my father

my journey did not want to end

i was home with my Dad driving the car

home in his care, home in his arms

not a worry

not a fear

not a doubt 

not a tear

never a monster

never a storm

never a tyrant 

or even a meteor swarm

could shake my faith in my Dad

he watched over me

if i was sad, glad, or even raving mad

he listened to my heart

and lifted the mood

sometimes with the sound of  familiar song

he hummed along 

he whistled on cue

 harmonized perfectly 

with rhythm & blues

he sang some country, gospel, & classic rock

even hummed along with  some jazz tunes

he sang Elvis & John Cash

Never forgetting John Mellencamp

he whistled Bridge Over the River Kwai

while never even blinking an eye

he could hit all sorts of  notes! 

You’d lose in a challenge! 

Don’t even attempt or try!
